History Buff Meet-Ups: Trains & Railroads
Come learn about local North Country history and share collective knowledge with neighbors! All ages are welcome for these free, low-key socials at the Tillotson Center. Whether you are well versed in the history of our region or would like to learn more, anyone interested is encouraged to attend. The Community Builders Hub will provide light refreshments to enjoy with discussions. Local historical groups involved include: Canaan Historical Society, Cohos Historical Society, 1799 Meeting House, Colebrook Area Historical Society, Errol Heritage Commission, Lemington Historical Society, Pittsburg Historical Society and the Historic Columbia Town Hall, who have all been gathering and communicating this past year to share ideas and collaborate.
Socials will take place on the third Friday morning of the month at the Tillotson Center in Colebrook, starting at 10 AM.
Discussion Topics:
Nov. 20th– Trains and Railroads: Paul Raffenello of the Cohos Historical Society and the 1799 Meeting House in Groveton will share a presentation of photos and his knowledge of the history of train use in the North Country, as the railroads were established to haul logs for the timber industry.
Dec. 18th– Historic Photos: Bring an old photo of a place in the North Country or piece of history you are having trouble identifying. Local history enthusiasts attending can take a look to see if they are able to solve the mystery with you!
Jan. 15th– Old Homes & Buildings: Do you live in an old home or have a business in an old building? How about an old barn? Bring a photo to share the history you know about it or ask the collective group if they have any more insight to share about its past. It’s always interesting to reflect and learn more. A prize will be given to the person with the oldest building photo shared!
